What are Essential Oils?

What are essential oils?

Perhaps you have experienced essential oils in the past, perhaps in a spa treatment or in body care products. The aromatic properties of these essential oils are just a small part of their incredible story. The world of essential oils opens the door to health-promoting botanical that can be diffused, inhaled, applied topically, incorporated into massage or taken internally, all to support your health and wellness.

Essential oils are the essence of the plant also known as their "life blood".  Essential oils can be distilled from many parts of a plant: stems, branches, rinds of the fruits, flowers, seeds, roots, bark, needles, and leaves. They are highly concentrated plant extracts obtained through process of distillation with steam or water, with high potency and aromatic properties to aid healing and protection in plant cells.

In simple terms, they are the plant's immune system. The oils protect the plants from external threats, such as insects, fungus, disease, and much more. Our bodies are made up of the same carbon based compounds, so essential oils works in perfect harmony to support our health and emotional well being. They are powerful tool  that has helped millions of families worldwide and empower themselves, and be given a choice to live more naturally (chemical-toxic-free)!

When these plants (herbs) are dried they are dehydrated and thus lose valuable nutritional properties and oxygenating molecules of the plant. Herbs are still very beneficial to use, however, on a lesser degree to essential oils. In the process of drying out the herb, it loses many molecules of the essential oil because they are volatile, meaning ‘to fly away’ or evaporate.
Because essential oils are so highly concentrated, their vibrational frequency ranges from 52 MHz and go as high as 320 MHz and for your reference, a healthy human body vibrates between 62MHz and 68MHz. When our body's frequency drops below 62MHz, we are getting sick!

In the same manner, how organic is the farming process and how precise is the distillation process with required temperature and time duration, will also determine how potent the essential oils that are extracted, hence their therapeutic grades. This explained why some essential oil, you can get for $5 a bottle, but for some like Young Living one, it cost more. Simply because the potency and healing properties are way more effective and compatible with our body system.

To put the potency of essential oils into perspective:
  • It takes the petals of 30 roses to make 1 drop of oil.
  • 1 drop of peppermint essential oil equates to 30 cups of herbal tea.
  • It takes 75 lemons to make one 15ml bottle of Young Living Lemon Essential oil.
  • 1 drop of essential oil has enough molecules to cover each cell in the human body 40,000 times.
How to use essential oils safely and effectively?
  1. Aromatically

    •  The easiest way to get the aromatic benefits of an essential oil is by simply putting a few drops from the bottle onto the palm of your hands. Cup your hands around your mouth and nose and inhale, breathing deeply for as long as needed.
    • Or diffuse a few drops with filtered water in a ultrasonic type of diffuser.
  2. Topically

    • Essential oils can be applied to the crown of your head, behind the ears, to your neck, and to your temples.
    • Or apply on face and body.
    • Also great to use with massage, or apply under the foot according to the vital-flex pressure points.
    • If the aroma of an oil is too strong, or your skin is sensitive, you can dilute it with a carrier oil. Young Living’s V-6™ Vegetable Oil Complex lets you adjust the strength of the oil according to your preference. You can apply essential oils to most parts of your body, but you want to be cautious of your most sensitive skin. To get the most benefit from your essential oils, you’ll find that certain applications are more effective than others.
  3. Internally

    • Not all essential oils can be ingested, but the very pure therapeutic graded ones.
    • You can directly put 1-3 drop under your tongue, or add to water or beverage, or take a vegetable capsule filled with a few drops of essentials and diluted with coconut oil.
    • Young Living’s Vitality™ line was developed to provide a clear distinction between oils for internal use and those for topical and aromatic use. All are the same pure, authentic essential oils, they've just labeled them differently so there’s no confusion!
Essential oil safety
Essential oils are very potent, so you have to be cautious when you use them. Remember, a little goes a long way!
  • Less is more! You can always add another drop, so start slow, whether you’re using your oils topically, aromatically, or internally.
  • Due to potency, some oils may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, immediately apply V-6 Vegetable Oil Complex or pure vegetable oil to the affected area to dilute.
  • Always read label directions for each individual oil before use.
  • Do not put essential oils in eyes, ears, nose, or other areas with sensitive skin.
